| 2008 REGIONAL SCHOLASTIC ART AWARDS The Allentown Art Museum will host an exhibition of student entries from Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties to the 2008 Regional Scholastic Art awards today through Feb. 10. The awards program/ceremony is 1 p.m. next Sunday at Symphony Hall, 23 N. Sixth St., Allentown. A reception follows 2-4 p.m. at the art museum. The Baum School of Art will also host two companion exhibitions -- 30 original National Scholastic award entries Jan. 20 to Feb. 10 and an exhibition of glass art by awards ceremony keynote speaker Jim Harmon opening next Sunday and continuing through Feb. 22. The National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the nation's oldest and most prestigious art and writing competition. It is the most comprehensive assessment of visual and literary arts achievement from secondary education in our country. The Regional Awards precede the National Scholastic Art Exhibition. All regional art entries winning Gold Key Awards advance to national judging. Nine area students won national awards in 2006. 2008 MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. PROSE AND POETRY CONTEST Catherine Sargeant of Kunkletown and Nicolas Wolf of Bangor won the Northampton Community College Martin Luther King Jr. prose and poetry contest. Both are NCC students. Sargeant and Wolf will read their poems at ''Voting the Dream'' at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall, on the main campus of NCC in Bethlehem Township. ART SHOW AND BRUNCH Friends of the Palmerton Area Library will host its second annual Art Show and Brunch at the noon March 9 at the library. LATINITAS WRITING CONTEST ''Latinitas'' magazine -- the first digital magazine made for and by Latina youth -- is holding a writing contest for Latina youth ages 14-21 on ''What it is to be Latina.'' Winning articles will be published in the print and online editions. Submissions should be 800-1,000 words in first person or Associated Press style on one of the following subjects: What is it like to be a Hispanic/Latina female in your hometown? What does it mean to be a Hispanic/Latina female to you? As a Hispanic/Latina female, are you doing something in your community to make a difference; if so what?
